Team USA losing isn’t an ‘upset’

  On Saturday July 10 th , Team USA lost to Team Nigeria in the men’s teams opening exhibition match. It was labelled a ‘historic upset’ by the masses but this description annoys me. Why is it so surprising that an Olympic calibre team lost to another Olympic calibre team? This isn’t the NBA where they face the same teams every season. This is the Olympics. The premiere sporting event that comes about every four years. Athletes spend years competing and getting their body ready for the opportunity to represent their country and win gold. This is an opportunity that these athletes nearly lost out on due the pandemic. No one is going to rollover for the “great” USA. I am a casual sports fan and proud of it but, Team USA’s previous success is not lost on me. The men’s team has taken gold home more often than not, including at the last three Olympic Games. Julieta ‘Antia has chosen her own path and you are not a part of it’ ‘Julieta’[2016] is the latest Spanish film written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar that follows a mother that reflects on her past life and the disappearance of her daughter. As she packs up her whole life and plans to move to Portugal with her boyfriend Lorenzo (Darío Grandienetti), Juleita Arcos (Emma Suárez) encounters her daughters childhood best friend Beatriz (Michelle Jenner) which causes her to relive many emotions that she has tried for years to suppress and had somewhat successfully done so, as Beatriz reveals that when in Switzerland she had spoken to her daughter, Antía, and learned that she has three children. This causes Julieta to regress and no longer want to go to Portugal but instead moves back to the apartment she shared with her daughter in Madrid as she hopes and waits for her to contact. ‘Are you sure self-pity is a luxury you can afford Jack’ – Al Shockley I have watched many films adapted from Stephen King novels, such as Misery and The Green Mile without knowing that they were initially books, so I decided to change my pattern and read one of his novels before they most likely became a film. I chose ‘The Cell’ to read but did discover later that it was adapted for film in 2016 but still started to read it. 200 pages later I realised I didn’t care about any of the characters despite their apocalyptic struggle and stopped. Still wanting to read a Stephen King novel and interested to learn how one could write horror, I reverted to his classic ‘The Shinning’, which got my attention from the start. The book was very much a pleasant read and reminded me of the film ‘The Green Mile’ because I was content with the lack of action and getting to know the characters; however the book is classified as horror it failed to provide enough for me.
