Team USA losing isn’t an ‘upset’

  On Saturday July 10 th , Team USA lost to Team Nigeria in the men’s teams opening exhibition match. It was labelled a ‘historic upset’ by the masses but this description annoys me. Why is it so surprising that an Olympic calibre team lost to another Olympic calibre team? This isn’t the NBA where they face the same teams every season. This is the Olympics. The premiere sporting event that comes about every four years. Athletes spend years competing and getting their body ready for the opportunity to represent their country and win gold. This is an opportunity that these athletes nearly lost out on due the pandemic. No one is going to rollover for the “great” USA. I am a casual sports fan and proud of it but, Team USA’s previous success is not lost on me. The men’s team has taken gold home more often than not, including at the last three Olympic Games. On the 22 nd of April, British YouTuber James Marriott uploaded a video where he made fun of the mainstream media's obsession and lack of information on social media platform’s particularly TikTok based on a BBC article . He then turned his attention to the ByteSquad, a new TikTok content house based in London that was the subject of the BBC’s article. He pokes fun at how much the ByteSquad’s house pales in comparison to the lavish LA mansions of their American counterparts, then suggests some of the group’s gimmicks are outdated. To finish James wishes the England’s newest content the best on their new endeavours. Membership sites are providing creators with long needed stability

  As I scrolled through YouTube for the umpteenth time a few days ago, I noticed that yet another youtuber I watch had opened a Patreon account. It wasn’t a creator that I’m personally interested in seeing more content from but still I scrolled through the comments on their community post. In the comments, I was disappointed to see the number of so-called supporters begging for the content to be released for free. I’m sure many of the commenters meant no harm and as many struggle to find financial stability during the pandemic, paying for yet another thing isn’t the greatness news. Still, demanding that content should be released for free is offensive to the creator. YouTube is increasingly becoming a popular career path for many but not everyone is able to earn a living wage from the platform, even with a sizeable fanbase.
