The Rock is the Worst Actor from the WWE

Despite the joint second highest paid actor of 2019 being Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, the question remains if WWE superstars can successfully change paths and become great actors.

I originally was going to discuss the idea that Dwayne Johnson’s acting career has been inferior to that of his former WWE colleague Dave Bautista’s , who is appearing in more films as of late, as I have found some of Bautista’s performances in films such as Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) to be much more enjoyable than The Rock’s blockbuster films like Central Intelligence (2016). However; although Bautista has vocalised his desire to be an actor as opposed to just a movie star, both men are stuck in the roles of the muscular and powerful characters that they were in the WWE.

Johnson and Bautista have upcoming summer releases, Hobbs & Shaw and My Spy respectively, which see them taking on roles of “badass” government operatives. I have no doubt that either film will be enjoyable, but I don’t believe they will show the two to have acting range as these are roles that they have filled many times before. It is more obvious in the case of Johnson as he is reprising his role as Luke Hobbs from the Fast and Furious franchise. The roles of ‘The Animal’ on the hand, have arguably been more diverse from appearing as Drax in the Marvel Universe to Everest in Hotel Artemis (2018), but each role still saw the former World Heavyweight Champion barely speaking and revolved around action and violence, similarly to being a WWE superstar.

The Rock is paid significantly higher reflecting the desire from audiences and movie studios to see him on the silver screen, but it would be inaccurate to suggest this reflects his acting capabilities, as this year he has been paid more than global star Will Smith whose acting range has been praised for decades.

The two never officially competed during their long careers with the WWE and I don’t think that they are competing in the world of film either, but as Bautista continues to assert his desire to be a well-respected actor and at times bashing the filmography of The People’s Champ, a closer comparison of the two is eminent.
