Yes Anthony Fantano your Twitch chat is Toxic

In the latest edition of his video series Let’s Argue, where music reviewer Anthony Fantano discusses the hot takes of his Patreon members, one supporter referred to his Twitch chat as ‘a toxic environment that feels like a very unwelcoming place for some people to participate in.'

This video is a compilation of Let’s Argue’s that Fantano has posted on to his Patreon.

The video was released shortly after the eye-raising beef between the YouTuber and rap superstar Drake which saw the Canadian direct messaging the reviewer on Instagram and telling him his ‘existence was a light 1’, attempting to poke fun at Fantano’s own rating system.

Fantano, whose main channel is called theneedledrop, disagrees with the hot take explaining that he and his moderators take great care to remove racist, bigoted, and hateful people from his chat.

He then goes to share that he doesn’t think his Twitch chat is particularly better or worse than any other content creators and that chats on the live streaming site are ‘dogpiley’.

Toxic is word that is overly missed used online nowadays and perhaps so in this instance, so it is understandable that Fantano has misunderstood what behaviour of his chat is being described as toxic.

It is the lack of independent thought of chat and their eagerness to dislike a new record that is being described as toxic.

But as Fantano says this isn’t unique to his chat.

KSI was previously surprised when watching to Imdontai’s reaction of his single Lose which features Lil Wayne, because Imdontai’s (real name Dontai Ethridge) fanbase didn’t automatically deem the song trash two seconds into the song.

This came after KSI called the chat toxic when they strongly criticised his 2020 single Houdini. The British rapper went on to mock the chat for changing their opinion when they discover Ethridge likes a song that they have been bashing.

Dontai later confirmed this himself, explaining he couldn’t even get his supporters to be silent for 15 seconds. Ethridge’s own chat agreed with his stance and seemingly have changed based on their response to KSI’s latest music.

However, it could just be chat once again changing their opinion along with Dontai who often enjoys KSI’s singles.

Still it is not hard to see why one of Anthony Fantano’s Patreon members has described his chat as toxic. Perhaps the online community being called out now will lead to a change similar to Imdontai’s but as Fantano said this a problem across Twitch.

Adin Ross, who had a meteoric rise on the platform, has recently shared that he believes his own chat is toxic and he is unsure how to fix the issue.

The streaming site is plagued with problems surrounding gambling content, inconsistent disciplinary action and recently reducing the pay split of its creators.

Dealing with toxic chats is a low priority problem for Twitch on a list that is constantly growing.
