The Americans are taking over - Love Island
Love Island used to be what some planned their summer’s around. Making sure they were free at 9pm Sunday to Friday, watching in groups, live-tweeting rapidly. But for years, the British reality show has been losing it’s grip on the nation.
It’s seemingly reached it’s peak this year as the American version of the show has become the focus of social media discourse. Even the American bombshell on the British series is the focus of the villa.
Since the seventh season of Love Island USA started in June it has been dominating everyones social feeds as viewers sared clips of sweet but more often questionable actions by the couples. Most of the conversation surrounded the outbursts of islander Huda during her time on the villa as well as a now viral meme with her, revealing to fellow islander Nic that she is a mother.
Even people in the UK have been weighing in despite the fact the series isn’t available to watch yet.
The Americans continued to be the topic of conversation back in Britain, as the first bombshell in the twelfth series was Las Vegas native Toni Laites who is unapologetically real with everyone in the villa. Although her comments might be to everyone’s taste, Toni has been exactly who she says she is her entire time in the villa.
At the fated movie night, while others sat in trepidation about what hidden dirt would be revealed Toni remained fearless - why? Because everything she’d said to people had been to their faces. In return the islanders laughed off most of Toni’s clips.
The most notable clip instead, is one of her breaking down in tears about how much it pained her to see fellow islander Harrison move on in his couple with Casa Amor girl Lauren.
If being authentic throughout the series hasn’t already won people over, certainly viewers would empathise with her emotional turmoil throughout the series. Constantly going back with a man that doesn’t treat her well. With no strong couples to root for this late in the season, Toni is a serious contender for winner this season and another example of Britain losing it’s grip over the summer of love.
The Brits aren’t losing complete control of what they’re known for, though. After low attendance and a half time show that wasted the top tier talent the FIFA World Club Cup,showed that it’s still hard to americanise the sport of football.
Still it begs the question, can the Brits reignite their spark with Love Island or is time to move on?
