My 7 Takeaways From Se7en

                                                                                                  ‘Alright, I’m confused’ Captain

The drab rainy atmosphere was perfect for the film. The constant rain becomes ironic because as much it is pouring rain Detective William Somerset and David Mills, (Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt respectively) are in a drought in terms of gathering evidence, having to resort to the illegal methods to keep up with the serial killer, John Doe. Other bloggers feel that writer Andrew Walker was able to encapsulate the sombre thoughts and feelings of people during the nineties.  Upon further thought I realised that the whole film is wet and rainy but at the end Doe manages to take the detective duo to the only place seemingly untouched by water to regain the upper hand.

The film felt like two hours in a bad way. For the first hour every minute of exposition was painstakingly felt until Somerset and Mills began to interact with John Doe.

The film has replay value because of the truly unique story created by Walker when he was in a dark place, as he was struggling to become a writer in New York. Also, the opening credits created by Kyle Cooper reveal a lot about John Doe that is later revealed in the film and is part of the reason Cooper’s work is revered today.

One of Brad Pitt's final lines,'What's in the box?', is the most quoted line from the final and a well known part of pop culture; however, much of Pitt's performance prior to this is great. From his strong head desire to work alone despite barely being a detective and witty jokes and actions as John Doe and the investigative process get the better of him.

The number seven is used intelligent throughout the film. From the stylised title of the film being Se7en, the seven deadly sins and the seven days left till Somerset retires.

It isn’t clear to me why Somerset automatically chooses to refer to the works of Chaucer and Dante to make the connection to the seven deadly sins as opposed to the Bible.

The name of the serial killer, who is only referred to as John Doe within the film, isn’t seen in the opening credits nor was it made public during the films production in order to allow the film to truly have suspense. This unfortunately can’t be done today due to our desire to know everything and the ease at which knowledge can be made available on social media.
