A Quiet Place
‘ I have always loved you’ – Lee Abbott
The brand new horror
film written and directed by John Krasinski’s causes people to question if they
really want quiet.
After living in
silence for over one year, hiding from creatures that are attracted to sound, the
Abbott family have established themselves in the woodlands and attempt to
connect to the outside world.
Tension is built up
from the start as we meet the family after they have been living in silence for
nearly a hundred days, seemingly having mastered living in silence as they don’t
wear shoes and communicate only in sign language. Due to the lack of dialogue
not a lot of information is given about each character and is left to be
figured out. But the well written script, co-written by Krasinski, Scott Beck
and Bryan Woods allows the important information to easily be made clear. Despite
not knowing a lot about the family a connection is still built with them as I
personally became very invested in their lives and wanted to see them succeed.
I think I can honestly say that this is the
only time in a horror movie I was so absorbed and connected with the characters
and the world of the film. The fact that Krasinski and Emily Blunt are actually
married with a family allowed them to deliver convincing characters as they
were both admittedly dealing with real feelings. This made each aspect of the
film more incredibly intense and impactful, along withthe fear created with
every different sound.
Sound is clearly the
most important element in the film because ‘If they hear you, they hunt you’. Even
the music and at times lack there off added to the ever building tension which
is unsurprising as experienced composer, Marco Beltrami, who also composed for
the Scream franchised, created many songs for the film. Also, according to
Wikipedia the crew were made to be especially quiet during filming so that the
diegetic sounds in the various locations in New York, could be captured and
enhanced in editing. This made the connection to the setting much more real for
me when watching the film especially the sounds of the creatures running as
they sounded as real and close to me.
This is definitely one of my favourite horror films and film in general as it is one I can’t stop thinking about and is successful on many levels - showing great acting with not a lot a dialogue and having an engaging story throughout.
