Baby Driver

Baby Driver

‘You took something away from me that I love and you know I gotta do the same.’ – Buddy

‘Baby Driver’ [2017] is an Edgar Wright written, directed and produced film that almost hits all the notes as a crime film.

In the film Ansel Elgort stars as the title character, Baby, who is the getaway driver for every robbery that Doc (Kevin Spacey) sends him to as he works to repay his debt. He syncopates each robbery to music as he knows every word, beat and emotion which is something I immediately connected with in both an envious and admirable way

I had not watched a full trailer for the film prior to seeing it so was pleasantly surprised when it developed into more than a criminal finding love.
Although Baby is presented as being not cut out for that life of crime, as I’m writing this I’m realising that he was the only character to keep his alias throughout the film until unavoidably at the end. It is also he that commits the first betrayal in the film by killing Bats (Jamie Foxx) as well as breaking some of sort of code of conduct by recording all of his conversations to create songs out of them. Plus he exudes a mystery confidence such as when talking to Debora or when he is talked down to or bullied by other members of the crew.

During the film I found myself understanding why some actors prefer for as little about the personal life as possible from being out in the public or why they don’t like to be in one role for a long time – because after that’s the only way we’ll see them. I found this happening when watching Jamie Foxx but the surprising thing is I have no particular thing that I link Jamie Foxx to. I know he is as a comedian, singer and actor but still during the film whenever his character, Bats, did something that I deemed to out of character for Jamie Foxx such as being aggressive or unnecessarily violent, I laughed or dismissed it.

At the end of the film Doc recruits Baby to be the getaway driver on a high scale robbery despite his debt now being repaid. Baby tries to get out of it and run away with his love interest Debora (Lily James) but can’t. The robbery doesn’t go as according to plan and everything breaks down from there as they run from the police as Baby loses somewhat of an ally in Buddy (Jon Hamm).

Without telling all I thoroughly enjoyed in the film due to the musical aspect of it especially but also due to be the storyline being somewhat unique although I found the ending a bit boring it is a still that I would see again.
