To be or not to be underrated

Image
Through my YouTube recommended I have recently discovered Youtuber Kelly Wakasa who does short form well edited, entertaining videos that show case his charismatic personality. But despite having 450k subscribers his comments are littered with people calling him underrated and I don’t understand why. Youtuber Kelly Wakasa  has over 400k subscribers  The amount of people on Y ou Tube as both consumers and content creators has increased dramatically in recent years. More and more of these   c reat o rs are reaching the milestones  of 100k, 1 million and 10 million. Veteran Youtuber PewDiePie received a ruby bro fist to mark 50 million and has since obtain over 50 million more.  But amidst all these large numbers the smaller ones are beginning to get undervalued, even those that aren't so small. It’s easy to look at Wakasa’s subscriber count and only see it  as numbers on a page but in reality that is at least four hundred and fifty thousand individuals that...

You've Got Mail

Image
‘All that means is that it wasn’t personal to you. But it was personal for me.’ – Kathleen Kelly The supposed romcom You’ve Got Mail does nothing particularly well as it attempts to show how romance is affected by the digital age. While online Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox are steadily falling in love, offline they become rivals as Fox’s superstore threatens the success of Kathleen’s independent book shop. We’re introduced to the two stars as they are effectively cheating on their real-life partners as they secretly email each other. Though this is something they should be scolded for, it’s hard to sympathise with their respective partners as they show little to no personality. By the time Patricia unleashes her obnoxious side, it’s too late to garner any negative feelings to her character because it’s easy to figure out that we won’t be seeing much of her soon. Even Frank who has much more screen time and whose over valuation of his writing career was a fun element, ...

Social Media is unprofessional for employee’s but not brands

Image
In 2015 Barclays ran a series of adverts that taught people LifeSkills such as to keep your email address professional and how to use your social media to get a job. There’s a lot pressure on job hunters to make sure that their social media is presentable with a bad social media history and a promotion of unpopular ideas nowadays costing people their jobs. However, what is still deemed unprofessional for employees seems to be fine for brands. At least three years ago American fast food chain Wendy’s started joining in on the social media fun by sending comedic clapbacks to it followers on Twitter. Since then companies have invested so much more into their social media marketing. A method brands, predominantly fast fashion brands, take is to tweet along with their customers about the most popular TV shows. In the United Kingdom this means tweeting about summer smash hit and winter flop Love Island . Despite the many complaints people have had about the show Brits sti...

Lack of diversity on Love Island

Image
With less than two weeks left of the summer show and this season racking up the most viewers for the ITV2 programme it begs the question; can we complain about the lack of diversity on Love Island if we persist to watch it? Season one of Love Island started in 2015 For seasons there has been complaints from Love Island viewers about the lack of racial and body diversity on the show. At the beginning of the fifth season viewers once again complained about the lack of racial diversity especially as black British contestants Yewande Biala and Sherif Lanre struggled to find love. Sadly, Yewande similarly to Samira Mighty from the 2018 season of the show broke down in the confessional about not being wanted for who she is. And the little racial diversity that the show had didn’t last too long as Sherif ended up leaving the villa for breaking rules and Yewande was the first girl to leave once she was left single by Danny Williams who choose to couple up with Arabella Chi. An...
